Following the devastating earthquake in Sichuan, BlueScope Steel China sent out an appeal to its employees for earthquake relief donations. BSS China employees responded to the call magnificently and donated over RMB515,400 to the company led appeal. However, they did not stop there. BSS employees from across China initiated and participated in a wide variety of charitable activities for earthquake relief- from the donation of urgently needed goods including non-perishable food, drinks, and even vans (which totaled approximately RMB30,000 in value), to over 35 employees registering to donate blood.

BlueScope China President, Bob Moore, in his announcement following the earthquake said, “Take care of your colleagues and yourself.” BlueScope China has been following this advice to do just that. The BSS China senior management team worked quickly to arrange the earthquake relief appeal to match the Chinese employee donation and to offer swift assistance to employees who were directly affected by the quake (including time off to assist their family in recovery and, in cases of extreme loss, compensation). All the BlueScope brands quickly joined the effort. Butler supplied an operator, Mr. Feng, with a house after his was badly damaged in the quake. BlueScope Steel Suzhou, with the support of Coated business, has donated numerous tents directly to impacted families. Lysaght Chengdu has initiated a new safety system to respond to emergencies. Finally, Butler and Lysaght have projects in place to help rebuild, not only the buildings, but the lives of those affected in the coming months.
