A Sichuan school badly damaged in May 12th 2008 earthquake in West Southern China was officially reopened on September 16th 2009 after a re-building project supported by BlueScope Steel.
BlueScope Steel partnered with the An County Education Bureau to rebuild one of the teaching building at Xingren Primary School in Mianyang City, Sichuan Province to China¡¯s highest safety standards.
The project resulted in the building of six new classrooms for up to 300 students at the Xingren School and helped develop new knowledge and skills about high-quality building techniques among local construction workers.
Now known as the BlueScope Teaching Building, the building is an achievement of many years of BlueScope Steel technical innovation and represents the safest and healthiest school room environment available today. The successful completion of the building brings together all of BlueScope Steel China businesses including Butler, Lysaght and our Suzhou coating line. This building is constructed of materials resistant to fire, earthquakes, mold, and decay. The structure is a highly engineered, lightweight and strong steel frame designed to withstand all of nature¡¯s forces. BlueScope Teaching Building is also environment friendly green building. All of the steel products that have used on this building are 100% recyclable so there is no waste.
BlueScope donate RMB1 million to build the project; The An County Government funded the building¡¯s fit out. BlueScope also extended the donation with extra materials worth139, 000 RMB for school operation facilities as well as provide 550 backpacks containing stationery for students.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, BlueScope China President Mr Bob Moore said: ¡°BlueScope is very pleased to have provided a safe, clean, and welcome learning environment for all of Xingren School students through the donation of the beautiful school building to the Anxian community. Our hope is that all of the students in this school will reach for their dreams and strive to make this land a better place for everyone.¡±
The principle from Xingren School said: ¡°We appreciate and proud of the new BlueScope Teaching Building. We are forever grateful for the generosity of BlueScope Steel which has helped us to rebuild this local school. Our schools are an essential foundation for our community now and into the future.¡±
BlueScope also has a long term plan to support the development of the Xingren School. The future of our world rests in the hands of these students and BlueScope is very happy to contribute to providing a safer future for all of them.
